SAMMY SEBASTIAN JUST RELEASED A NEW TRACK AND WE'RE PRETTY NOSEY OVER HERE AT WIZARD WATER, WE THOUGHT WE'D DIVE RIGHT IN.
TRACK NAME IS - ROADIES IN THE DANDIES- LISTEN HERE
Sammy Sebastian is a Country artist from Melbourne and has just released a Live at Robbo's tracklist full of comedic gems.
Your music is described as comedic yet also delving into more serious themes. How do you find the balance between humour and depth in your songs?
well to be honest bro it’s about which songs which right, like sometimes I’ll think of a funny theme like in “Han solo” or “whole snack” and I’ll run with it.
Other times I might write something with a change of pace like “as good as it gets” cos it’s just some shit I think will be good to write and hopefully someone in my audience will get as much out of it as I did.
As a country musician, how does your Melbourne upbringing influence your music and songwriting, particularly in terms of incorporating local landmarks and way of life into your lyrics?
I really couldn’t tell you mate, it’s just the sound of music I make when it’s just me and my guitar, what I can tell you is “roadies in the dandies” is about enjoying the finer things in life whilst cruising thru the Dandenong ranges.
Or in ballad of the pizza delivering bud dealer it’s all differant streets / suburbs of east Melbourne cos that’s writing about the story of the pizza guy driving round the neighborhood.
You've mentioned that you just want to have a good time with your music and share that enjoyment with your audience. Can you tell us about a memorable performance or moment where you felt that connection with your audience?
one hundred percent man I just wanna have a good time, and getting an audience to be in the moment singing and clapping along is mission accomplished for sure.
The best moment of this happening was probably at the Nevermind bar in Hawthorn last week at my gig where everyone was singing along to my song “as good as it gets” it was wholesome as mate.
Being labeled as an "Australian redneck," how do you embrace or challenge that stereotype through your music?
I straight up embrace it, as the saying goes bloke. If the shoe fits wear it. I am what I am and I wouldn’t have it any other way and being comfortable with who I am makes it a hell of a lot easier to be creative with the confidence that gives me.
What inspires you to write comedic songs, and are there any specific experiences or observations in Melbourne that have inspired your humorous lyrics?
I guess I kind of touched on it earlier but I’ll get an idea on a particular topic and write a story about it or someone might give me a funny premise. In turns of inspires giving everyone a few laughs is a good time and it’s pretty country to make songs that take the piss a bit so I think that about sums it up bloke.
Can you take us through your songwriting process? How do you come up with ideas for your songs, and what's your approach to crafting comedic narratives?
well here’s the thing about the process, I usually struggle to come up with ideas but when the floodgates open I’ll often just write the lyrics or whatever in like 15 minutes or so and then put the finishing touches / chord progression behind it. But it’s something I’m getting better at too in terms of ideas / premises for a story or song.
In addition to comedy, do you find yourself exploring any other themes or genres in your music?
sure I also write about what’s around me or what I’m feeling and telling a story. Whenever I pick up my guitar I write what comes out and it’s a take it leave it kind of thing with whether or not I’ll put it out there.
What's the most rewarding aspect of being a musician for you, and what keeps you motivated to continue creating music?
to be honest it’s a wholesome thing that I get to do this and it’s something I love and even when I put it down I’ll come back to playing my guitar and singing again sometime. I feel like it’s good for the soul as long as the magics still there and that’s rewarding in itself, but to get to share something pure like that with everyone that wants to share it is really something special.
Are there any upcoming projects or performances that you're excited about, and can you give us a sneak peek into what's next for Sammy Sebastian?
well I like to keep my cards close to my chest, but big Neech Inc may just go international, you heard it here first, stay tuned folks!
Finally, if you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I’d have to say Toby Keith or Johnny Cash, both are some of the greatest country artists in the history of country artists in my book and it’d be cool as if there was a song. Unfortunately neither of them will ever happen as they’ve both passed on so RIP, and pour some out for the goats.
