OUTER WORLDS | INTERVIEW + TRACK REVIEW

Updated: Mar 5

Melbourne metalcore band Outer Worlds have been making waves with their latest EP Demarcation, a release that marks a new era for the group. What started as a COVID project has evolved into something far greater, with a refined sound, a killer live show, and a growing presence in Australia’s heavy music scene. Fresh off a sold-out EP launch and gearing up to support Eviscerate the Crown at their first Melbourne show, the band is proving they’re ready to take things to the next level. We caught up with Outer Worlds to talk about their evolution, their influences, and what’s next for the band.

TRACK REVIEW

Outer Worlds bring pure intensity with their latest single The New Way, a track that hits with the force of a tidal wave. From the opening riff, it’s clear this one stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the best in modern metalcore, capturing the energy of bands like Parkway Drive while carving out its own space.

The breakdown is a monster—crushing, relentless, and packed with conviction. Lyrically, there’s a fire behind every word, none more so than the defiant chant, “We are the new way,” which propels the song into its final stretch. The closing section locks into an intricate, razor-sharp riff that twists and turns with precision, sending the track out on an electrifying high.

This is a song built to be felt in a live setting—pure adrenaline, controlled chaos, and a statement of intent from Outer Worlds.

Outer Worlds started as a COVID project and has since evolved into a force in Melbourne’s metalcore scene. How has the band’s vision changed since those early days?

We originally had no solid plan or goals in mind for the band when we started, but as things progressed it was clear that we needed to take it a bit more seriously and aim a bit higher to play bigger and better shows with a solid lineup and polished material.

Your latest EP Demarcation has been called your best work yet. What did you do differently this time around, and how do you feel it defines this new era of Outer Worlds?

Our early works were all mixed in-house by us, and it became apparent that the quality was slightly lacking. So we outsourced the mixing and mastering of the EP to make sure it sounded as good as possible, which has made a huge difference as we want to be taken more seriously in the scene.

Your EP launch show was a sellout—what was that night like for you, and did it feel like a turning point for the band?

It was absolutely electric for all of us. All the bands we had in the lineup brought fantastic energy to really get the crowd ready as the night went on. The night gave us a true sense of confidence, knowing what we’re doing is on the right track and that there are people here who want to check it out live!

You’re supporting Eviscerate the Crown at their first Melbourne show in March—what’s the key to delivering a killer support slot?

Our philosophy is go hard or go home. We make sure to bring the warm-up the headliner deserves so the crowd is as ready as possible to get rowdy and scream every word back at them. We want the crowd to be engaged, captured, and feeling like they belong.

Melbourne has such a deep metalcore scene. How has being based there influenced your sound or the way you approach your music?

We just write music that we all enjoy. At the end of the day, what the scene is doing doesn’t play too much on our minds. We love 00s metalcore and want to see what that sounds like in a modern context. Melbourne is a breeding ground for diverse soundscapes among bands, so the openness for experimentation is the real influence you could say the scene has.

Metalcore as a genre is constantly evolving. Are there any new or unexpected influences that have crept into your sound?

Between the five of us, we all bring something different to the band. There are a lot of similarities, but the differences allow us to be creative within it. Pop-punk, death metal, nu-metal, rock—it’s all in there to some level, and we’re still letting whatever inspires us drive what comes next, so we never know what else could creep in!

What’s the most intense or memorable gig you’ve played so far, and what made it stand out?

Next to our EP launch, the most intense gig we’ve played so far would be at the Sooki Lounge supporting Break Stuff. The room was full, the crowd was popping off, and that night, all five of us were locked in—it was magical.

Losing and gaining members is a huge shift for any band. What has Corey brought to Outer Worlds that has shaped this new chapter?

Corey’s involvement in the band has definitely given us more drive and motivation. He’s always pushing us to be the best we can possibly be by bringing a high level of energy and enthusiasm to the group.

If you had to describe your music to someone who’s never listened to metalcore before, what’s the best way to introduce them to Outer Worlds?

Intense, loud, and aggressive, but sometimes beautiful. It has one foot in metal/hardcore, but over the years, firmly has another foot in catchy choruses you can sing along with. So just open yourself to enjoying something different, even if it’s just one section!

What’s next for Outer Worlds after the Melbourne show—new music, more touring, or something unexpected?

New music is keenly on the horizon. We’ve been working pretty tirelessly on some stuff, so the rest of this year should be a constant deluge of Outer Worlds! We may even get to bring our live show to a few new states too!
