TRACK REVIEW
New Forever is a sonic journey that feels like a nod to the atmospheric grandeur of Pink Floyd, infused with the raw energy of modern rock. The track masterfully balances peaks and valleys, with high-energy choruses juxtaposed against softer, introspective moments. The walking bassline and subtle vocal delivery during the verses create a calm yet compelling build-up, seamlessly transitioning back into the powerful chorus.
While no single element overshadows the others, this cohesive blend is precisely what makes New Forever stand out. Each component, from the intricate instrumentation to the dynamic production, complements the next, creating a polished yet emotive piece that showcases JULIUS’s ability to craft a track that resonates on multiple levels. A true example of balance and finesse, this song is a testament to their artistry.
Tell us about your new EP “New Forever.” What was the inspiration behind it, and how does it represent the band’s sound?
‘New Forever’ is very special to us all, as it is our first EP and has elements that showcase our individuality as musicians, whilst maintaining the overall genre. We have ensured the music sounds like the lyrics and the message of the songs.
The inspiration comes from the courage to embrace change and the belief that we can make a lasting impression with our music.
With the addition of a new band member, how has the dynamic within JULIUS changed or evolved since the creation of this EP?
Licia our new lead singer, has brought a great contrast to our look firstly, by standing along-side us dudes and leading the spotlight. Then, most importantly, she has an amazing voice that has a varied range, which suits our sound and expands our potential to write bigger songs and be a more dynamic band. We can already see ourselves pushing the boundaries with song-writing since Licia has joined.
“Fading” is quickly becoming a fan favourite. What do you think it is about this track that resonates so strongly with listeners?
From the feedback we received, the chord progression in the verse has been a stand out feature. We have been told it is extremely ‘catchy’. Furthermore, the chorus is something that is easy to sing along to and we have received compliments about that as well.
How did you go about writing and recording “Fading”? Was there a specific moment or experience that influenced the song?
Kyle our song-writer came up with that one, then brought it to the band for everyone to add their flair. The intention with writing ‘Fading’ (as is with every song) is to have the listener remember the song by the music and understand the lyrics, so they too can relate to it. The song was basically written in an afternoon session when I (Kyle) was messing around with some blues inspired licks that could have big bends and stops for the vocal line. Having recently lost our (Kevin and Myself) father, and witnessing him “Fading” in the hospital, I wanted to write a song about that journey, his fight through life and how we all face similar journeys in some ways. Where we get told ‘where to stand’ and ‘colour within the lines’ etc. by the made up powers. Also, I did not want the song to be pandering or sad really, but have power to it - and that’s what I came up with.
We learnt the song after I did a quick demo by a phone recording and had a couple of sit-down sessions with the vocalist (previous) to finalise structure and ascertain his input as well. Later, we got it professionally recorded with the whole EP.
As a band drawing from both classic and modern rock influences, how do you balance those elements to create your unique sound?
To be honest, it’s not something we consciously set out to do, but quite fortunate that the end product sounds like that - which is exactly what we want it to sound like. So, maybe we ‘sub-consciously’ write it that way. Or, who knows really!!! Also, each of us listen to different stuff which helps with the varied influence in our playing.
What was the most challenging part of recording your debut EP, and how did you overcome it?
Oh gosh, where to start!!! Joking, it was very seamless actually, as everyone was well prepared and our producer (Mike Trubetskov from EOL studios) was just a legend to work with. The only thing we found difficult was sometimes committing to parts that we felt we could do better, but just had to draw a line under it - but I guess that’s the same for most recording artists.
Given the diverse musical backgrounds of each member, how do you approach songwriting and collaboration within the band?
Well what works for our band is that we build on each other’s core strengths. As Kyle has strong song-writing skills and experience, he’s the one to write the songs, then presents it to the band where the other members give their input and polish it until we are happy with everything.
Your live shows have gained a reputation for being electrifying. What’s your secret to delivering such high-energy performances?
Well the genre of music helps for sure! We absolutely love rock music and think it’s the best way to express yourself. Moreover, we think losing inhibition is key for a good performance; especially when the crowd can see you having a good time and feel connected enough to do so as well.
Looking ahead to 2025, what are your main goals for the band as you continue to build your presence in the modern rock scene?
New music is first on the cards, we are already preparing songs for pre-production. We aim to play bigger shows with more bands and reach as many people as possible.
How can fans best support you and stay connected as you promote the new EP and prepare for future releases?
Great question and we have a great answer: Follow our Spotify page, Youtube page, Apple music, Social media pages, like/share/subscribe to our music, tell your friends, family, enemies and make sure you come along to a gig. Easy as that !!!
