TRACK REVIEW
"Getting Kinda Freaky" by Flip That Groove is an intricate blend of rhythms and melodies that sets a captivating vibe from the very first beat. The track opens with an engaging drum beat and delicate string work, creating a foundation that feels both fresh and familiar. As the 16th-note tambourine kicks in, Cloutie's vocals enter, adding a chill, seductive atmosphere that draws the listener in effortlessly.
The instrumentation weaves itself around the vocals in a seamless dance, creating a slow progression that ebbs and flows with the beat. This interplay between the rhythmic pull of the drums and the melodic layers makes the track feel like a tantric journey, each element perfectly complementing the other.
The production is meticulously crafted, showcasing Flip That Groove's talent for merging diverse genres into a cohesive soundscape. The fusion of Dance, Techno, Funk, Indie Pop, and Hip Hop elements results in a unique listening experience that feels both experimental and accessible.
Your latest release is a 4-track EP in collaboration with Melbourne Hip Hop artist Cloutie Will. Can you tell us more about how this collaboration came about and what the creative process was like?
We worked on another project together and we both enjoyed that process and the result so much we really wanted to explore another theme so I set about composing some solid beats and Cloutie went very deep in to Sex and erotic nature of life including temptations and gender respect all things we both believe in deeply.
Your music seamlessly blends genres like Dance, Techno, Hip Hop, and Funk. How do you approach merging these diverse styles into a cohesive sound?
These are sounds that resonate with me as a music creator and producer. I listen to a lot of music and artists myself and those influences I celebrate and they naturally find their way out of me. These sound merge so well it gets Me moving. It basically merges organically in the creative process I don't think too hard when I am composing
Collaboration is a key part of Flip That Groove’s creative process. How do you select the guest artists and musicians you work with, and what do they bring to your projects?
Yeah I'm very big on sharing this journey with like minded souls. I go to Gigs I love seeing support acts. If an aritists does something in the set I think is awesome I go up at the end of the show and tell them it was great we start talking and I ask if they want to participate in a project most times they do It's all about connecting and enjoying the studio environment
"Getting Kinda Freaky" addresses themes of love, lust, and body. What inspired you to write this song, and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?
Cloutie is such an incredible song writer and very confident in herself. Sexuality and body awareness is something that should be discussed in a positive way because its got an undercurrent of negativity with young developing adults we need to support and respect this and not shame someone because of there choices.
Your track "Hungry Ghost" delves into the theme of greed and the pursuit of wealth. Can you share more about the story behind this song and its significance?
Greed, Wealth and Consumption has a hypnotic effect in the world right now with power and control at the heart of everything .We need to step back and evaluate other things that possibly has more substance like art music love and respect Cloutie put the lyrics together really well in the construction of the song. These things will have more significance as it can be shared more evenly in the community than power hungry money chasing behaviours
"Sex & Violence" is known for its explicit exploration of eroticism and consent. How do you navigate creating music with such bold themes while ensuring it remains impactful and respectful?
Yeaah if your confronted by sex and consent maybe its time we discuss it and as an artist difficult themes inspire me to get a message in to the community. My job in this process is to make a sound that has layers for the subject matter so listeners can get a feel of the subject and possibly start to look at how others might think and feel in their sexuality. It a challenge I thrive on
"One Love Is All" is an anti-hate anthem promoting acceptance and inclusivity. How important is it for you to use your music as a platform for social issues, and what impact do you hope this song has?
My whole music journey has been a platform for social issues growing up listening to great message based bands like the Clash, Bronski Beat I love how they had confidence to find their voice through music. This song came about when the Nazi element in Melbourne started shutting down Drag Queens doing story time to kids. I find that incredible I grew up in the UK pantomine and cross dressing and performance art was every where Homophobia has a loud voice from a small section of our community but I have a voice too so they can go fuck themselves.
With a strong presence in Melbourne's underground scene, how has the local music community influenced your work and growth as an artist?
Local music community is incredible here Im always inspired by live performance as an artist if gives me fuel to create. There is a clear distinction in my creative flow and my exposure to live music and art in general its my absorption time as a producer and composer this is when I grow
Cloutie Will’s live sets are described as explosive and visually captivating. How do these performances enhance the themes and energy of the music you create together?
Well when you get to see Cloutie Will perform its like a gift. I find it exhilarating every time I go to a show, I get goose bumps and walk away invigorated once again its fuel to My creative energy. I also learn a bit more about her as an artist and creative soul . She has been doing a few Fringe gigs around Australia lately I strongly recommend seeing Her perform
